SIMON BALTO is a singer of folk and alt-country songs who recently relocated back to Madison from Chicago, IL. Originally from the Driftless area of Southwest Wisconsin, he has lived in Madison on and off for a decade. Coming on the heels of an EP of field recordings that was released in 2012, Balto’s first full-length album, The Roads that Make Men Weary, is a ten-song collection that roots itself solidly in the storytelling tradition. It draws stylistic influence from Dylan and Paul Simon and Jason Isbell, among many others, and is especially informed by the hills of western Wisconsin that were his early home, and by the people he’s met there and in travels around the country. The lyrics are the focus here, set over sparse acoustic arrangements of guitars, harmonica, and mandolin. The stories narrate the lives of workers and lovers, mothers and sons, the prideful and the abused. They drift between feelings of hope, loss, love, and more, without approaching the maudlin. The Irish music site Deadly Music! recently noted that Balto’s songwriting is driven by “poetry as skillful as Blood on the Tracks,” and in a review naming it “highly recommended,” said listeners “won’t be able to help comparing [it] to early Bob Dylan with the delicate delivery of Fionn Regan and the Americana influence of RayLaMontagne.”

MOTH MOUNTAIN is a folk rock duo (vocals/guitar/drums) featuring the soulful croon of singer/songwriter Joe Dawson and the steady groove of drummer Matt Olson. Joe and Matt began working together in 2010, recording a handful of Joe Dawson’s original songs with Matt Olson providing drums and bass for a 4 song EP which was never formally released. While the two found an instant musical connection, both were fully occupied with a variety of other musical projects until schedules finally aligned in the Summer of 2013 and they began playing shows and recording their full length debut album, Always Never Again, which has just been released.
